Mobile Payments Via Card Readers at Your School

Mobile payments are electronic payment services performed with a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet.  These payments can happen by opening an app on a smartphone, tapping a device to a terminal, or even payment via text message.  At independent schools today, mobile payments most commonly occur via the use of card readers.

Before mobile devices came into play, the only option for schools wishing to accept card payments “over the counter” was by using a credit card imprinter, also known as “knuckle busters.” These devices manually imprint payment card information on carbon paper via a back and forth swipe over the card.

Most schools accept payment cards and supplement their payment methods by having a few mobile card readers on hand.  Mobile readers, a small hardware device that connects to a tablet or smartphone with a headphone jack, have revolutionized electronic payments and allow merchants to meet consumers wherever they are – the front office, the sporting event, or whever cell data or wi-fi is available.

Diamond Mind has provided hundreds of schools with mobile card readers compatible with their existing merchant account(s). Benefits include:

  • Receive payment deposits more quickly than check deposits;
  • Fully secure and encrypted
  • Email receipt capability
  • Digital Signature Capture
  • No external power supply required

Card readers are convenient and easy to use.   Their mobility works especially well for fundraising events such as auctions, sporting events, and even bake or spirit wear sales.  Before you decide on a mobile card reader brand, do a bit of homework first:

  • Keep customer service high on your priority list.  It’s best to have a customer service department available to help with any issues that come up.
  • What are processing fees connected with the reader?
  • When and how will payments be deposited in your school’s bank account. This can vary.
  • What payment data is available with your card reader?  Some collect only limited data such as a transaction amount, date, and card number.  This can make reporting and reconciling time consuming and difficult.
